Family Dental Plus — Serving Rancho Palos Verdes, CA
Rancho Palos Verdes sits at the southern end of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, with a median age of 49.1 years and 90.5 percent of residents in the same home year over year. Family Dental Plus in Wilmington has served South Bay families since 1995, with six specialties under one roof.
The community in brief
Rancho Palos Verdes incorporated on September 7, 1973, after residents voted to stop a proposed coastal development — the Palos Verdes Bay Club and other multi-unit complexes — from going forward on the coast. The city has maintained notably restrictive zoning ever since. That founding decision shaped a community that has changed less than most of its neighbors over the past five decades.
The demographics reflect that stability. The median age is 49.1 years, well above California's statewide median of 36. Median household income is $179,623 (2020–2024 American Community Survey); 42.6 percent of households report income of $200,000 or more, compared with 20.5 percent statewide and 13.4 percent nationally. The owner-occupied housing rate is 80.4 percent, and the median owner-occupied home value is $1,609,400.
The single most telling figure for a neighborhood dental practice is the residential stability rate: 90.5 percent of residents age 1 and older were living in the same home one year prior. That is not just a statistic — it describes a population that builds long-term relationships with local providers and returns to them year after year. Families in this part of the Peninsula often carry dental histories spanning multiple decades in the same ZIP code. A practice that can continue that history, rather than start it over, carries real practical value.
Landmarks and a live civic challenge
Point Vicente Lighthouse has stood on this coastline since 1926. The tower is 67 feet tall, positioned on a cliff 130 feet above the water, and is operated by the United States Coast Guard. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
For decades the lighthouse shared the shoreline with Wayfarers Chapel, a National Historic Landmark completed in 1951 and designed by Lloyd Wright. The chapel served as the National Memorial to Emanuel Swedenborg until the land beneath it began shifting at an accelerated rate, forcing closure in February 2024. The structure was disassembled and placed in storage in July 2024; the prospective new location is Battery Barnes, adjacent to Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall, above Point Vicente Lighthouse and Golden Cove.
The Palos Verdes Peninsula landslide zone remains an active issue for a portion of the city. On September 2, 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, and power was cut to 245 homes in the affected area. In 2023, the city received a $23 million FEMA grant toward mitigation. Not every RPV neighborhood is in the slide area, but for residents dealing with displacement or ongoing uncertainty, consistent access to routine healthcare — including dental care — becomes harder to maintain.
Schools and the full age range
The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District served 10,393 students across 18 schools during the 2023–2024 school year. This is not a single-generation community. Rancho Palos Verdes has families at every stage — children coming in for first dental exams, teenagers in orthodontic treatment, adults managing restorative work done over decades, and older adults evaluating implant or surgical options. A practice that handles all of those needs without sending patients to outside specialists is a practical fit for that range.
What Family Dental Plus offers
Family Dental Plus has been in continuous operation since 1995. Six specialties share one office: general dentistry, pediatric care, orthodontics, dental implants, oral surgery, and cosmetic dentistry. A family can bring a child for a first cleaning and discuss an adult implant case in the same visit, without coordinating between separate offices. Records stay in one place. Dr. John Cohen, DDS, the practice's owner and lead dentist, built Family Dental Plus on the premise that a single practice should handle the full scope of a family's dental needs — from first cleanings through surgical implant placement.
The full range of available services is listed on the services page. The practice is open Monday 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM and Tuesday through Friday 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Bilingual staff are available in English and Spanish every day the office is open. A Spanish-language version of the site is at familydentalplus.com/es/.
Insurance and financing
The practice accepts most PPO plans and files claims directly. For uninsured patients, in-house payment plans and financing through CareCredit and Cherry are available. For the most direct answer on whether a specific plan is accepted, call (310) 830-3452 or review the insurance and financing page.
To schedule a visit or send a question, use the contact page. New patients are welcome, and same-day care is available for dental emergencies.
