Harbor City covers 2.58 square miles between West Sepulveda Boulevard and West Anaheim Street, immediately north of Wilmington. It came into Los Angeles as a step toward the city's consolidation with Wilmington and San Pedro, and it remains a family-heavy pocket of the South Bay we know well.

Harbor City sits inside a tidy set of boundaries: West Sepulveda Boulevard on the north, Western Avenue and the Harbor Freeway on the east, West Anaheim Street and Palos Verdes Drive on the south, and the Lomita and Torrance line on the west. It was originally part of the Rancho San Pedro Spanish land grant, and at the 2000 census 23,561 people lived here — roughly 9,127 per square mile.
The households behind those numbers are mixed. For ZIP 90710 in 2023, the median household income was $77,486, under the California median of $96,334. Family households reported a median of $87,970, compared with $49,005 for nonfamily households. Landmarks that anchor daily life
Most people in Harbor City can picture Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park without a map. The 231-acre municipal park at 25820 Vermont Avenue holds a golf course and the 45-acre Machado Lake with its freshwater bayou wetland. The course opened with a golf tournament on October 12, 1958; the park was dedicated in 1971 and renamed to honour Ken Malloy in 1992. Machado Lake is a natural low-point, gathering runoff from a 9,000-acre watershed — a reminder of how much of the South Bay drains through this one green corner.
Just up Vermont Avenue is Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center, a general medical and surgical hospital at 25825 S. Vermont Avenue that serves patients across Los Angeles County. Schools and neighbours
The area's comprehensive high school is Narbonne High School, established in 1925 on a 37.5-acre campus at 24300 S. Western Avenue and run by LAUSD. Enrolment was 1,667 in 2023–2024, with 80% of students economically disadvantaged. Families with children at Narbonne are among our steadiest patients, and school-year mornings and summer afternoons shape when they can come in.
Harbor City's mix has real history behind it. Normont Terrace, once a 400-unit public housing project here, was razed in 1997 and replaced by a mixed-income development renamed Harbor Village in 1999. The area also carries a distinctive language note: by one commercial estimate, 2.6% of residents five and older primarily speak Japanese at home, higher than 99.3% of American neighbourhoods.
