Family Dental Plus — Dentist Serving Willowbrook, CA
Willowbrook is a densely settled unincorporated community in southern Los Angeles County — 24,295 residents across just 1.68 square miles at the 2020 census — with no city government of its own. Family Dental Plus in Wilmington serves families here across six dental specialties, with bilingual staff on duty every day the office is open.
Willowbrook at a glance
The name “Willowbrook” traces to a county-recorded tract filed in 1903, straddling what was then the Pacific Electric Railway line to Long Beach. That land had been part of the 4,500-acre Rancho Tajauta land grant of 1843, later subdivided into residential lots suited to semi-rural uses. Today the community covers 1.68 square miles. The 2020 census counted 24,295 residents at a density of 14,495.8 persons per square mile.
Because Willowbrook is an unincorporated census-designated place, it has no mayor, no city council, and no local police department. Residents are governed directly by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Public services — health programs among them — flow through county departments rather than any city hall.
Healthcare access in Willowbrook
The Watts/Willowbrook area carries a federal Medically Underserved Area designation (MUA ID 00337), first assigned April 12, 1982, by the Health Resources and Services Administration. Its Index of Medical Underservice score is 51.1; the threshold for MUA status is 62 or below, which makes that figure a marker of substantial measured need in the area.
Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital opened there on July 7, 2015, in a $210 million building with 131 beds — 93 medical/surgical, 20 ICU, and 18 obstetrical. It operates as a private nonprofit safety-net facility; approximately 80% of its patients are covered by Medicaid. The broader MLK Medical Campus also includes the MLK Outpatient Center and Augustus F. Hawkins Mental Health Center.
A few blocks away, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science occupies an 11-acre campus at 1731 E. 120th Street. Founded in 1966 in direct response to conditions exposed by the 1965 Watts Riots, CDU is one of only four federally designated Historically Black Graduate Institutions in the United States — and the only one west of the Mississippi River.
Community profile
The 2020 census recorded Willowbrook as 81.3% Hispanic or Latino; 35.9% of residents were born outside the United States. The LA County Department of Public Health’s 2021 community profile put 21% of families in poverty, compared to 11% countywide. The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey estimates median household income at $62,582, against a national figure of $80,734.

Six specialties for the whole family
Family Dental Plus has served the South Bay from its Wilmington location since 1995. Dr. John Cohen, DDS, leads a practice that handles general dentistry, pediatric care, orthodontics, dental implants, oral surgery, and cosmetic dentistry — all under one roof, with one set of patient records. Families rarely need an outside referral for any of those services.
Staff speak Spanish every day the office is open. A Spanish-language section of the site covers services and scheduling in full. Hours are Monday 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
Families living in Willowbrook travel the same South Bay corridor as those we serve from Watts and Carson. To schedule a visit, use the online contact form or call (310) 830-3452.
