Dental Care Near Paramount, CA — Family Dental Plus

Paramount, California — a 4.7-square-mile city of 53,733 residents — is one of the younger, denser communities in southeast Los Angeles County. Family Dental Plus has served the area from its Wilmington office since 1995, offering six specialties in one location with bilingual staff every day the office is open.

A compact city with deep roots

Paramount formed from the merger of two unincorporated communities, Hynes and Clearwater, in 1948, and formally incorporated as a city on January 30, 1957. The name came from Frank Zamboni — then president of the local Kiwanis Club — who proposed calling the new city after Paramount Boulevard, itself named for the Paramount Motion Picture Company, which had served as the former boundary between the two communities. Paramount operates as a General Law city, governed by California state statutes rather than a custom municipal charter.

Today, 53,733 people live within 4.7 square miles of land — a density of roughly 11,367 people per square mile. The median age is 32.7 years, younger than the California median of 37.5 and the national median of 38.8. Average household size is 3.64 people, compared with the U.S. average of 2.54, which reflects the multigenerational working families who make up much of the city.

Eight in ten residents identify as Hispanic or Latino (81.3%), with Black residents at 9.2%, White residents at 4.1%, and Asian residents at 3.7%. Foreign-born persons make up 36.3% of the population, and more than 71% of residents age five and older speak a language other than English at home — more than three times the national rate of 22.0%.

The Zamboni connection

Frank and Lawrence Zamboni opened the Iceland Skating Rink in Paramount in January 1940, built to hold up to 800 skaters across 20,000 square feet of ice. Resurfacing that amount of ice by hand was slow and costly, and Frank Zamboni spent the following decade developing a machine to automate the process. In 1950, he formally established Frank J. Zamboni & Co. in Paramount to manufacture and sell ice resurfacing machines; the machines are still made there. The original Model A resurfacer remains on permanent display — and in operating condition — at the Iceland rink. U.S. Patent No. 2,642,679 covers the invention. One middle school in the district carries his name: Frank J. Zamboni School.

Schools and the district

Paramount Unified School District enrolled 12,730 students across 20 schools during the 2023 school year. Hispanic students account for 89.2% of district enrollment, and 61.6% of students qualify for the federal free and reduced price meal program — a standard indicator of economic need in public school data.

Work along the freight corridor

The Alameda Corridor — the 20-mile freight rail artery connecting the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to the national rail network — runs directly through this region. Paramount is among the corridor cities where warehouses, cold storage facilities, food processing plants, and distribution operations have concentrated, employing a significant share of the local workforce in physically demanding jobs.

Dental care within reach of Paramount

Family Dental Plus has operated out of Wilmington since 1995. The office — at 104 W Anaheim Street, Suite C — is reachable from Paramount via the 710 freeway. Staff speak English and Spanish every day the office is open, which matters in a city where more than 71% of residents speak a language other than English at home. The practice's full website is also available in Spanish at the página en español.

Six areas of care are handled under one roof: general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, dental implants, oral surgery, and cosmetic dentistry. Dr. John Cohen, DDS, and the team manage the full range in-house — patients do not need separate referrals for braces, extractions, or implant placement. One phone number, one set of records, one office. The services page describes what each specialty covers.

With a median age of 32.7 and average households of 3.64 people, Paramount has a lot of families with children at home. The pediatric dentistry specialty at Family Dental Plus sees patients starting at age one, and orthodontic consultations for children and teens are handled in the same office as general adult care — no cross-town referrals required.

At 16.6%, the share of Paramount residents under age 65 who lack health insurance runs well above state and national averages. Family Dental Plus accepts most PPO plans and files insurance directly; uninsured patients can ask about in-house payment plans and cash-pay discounts. For specific coverage questions, calling the office is the most direct route. Insurance and financing details are also outlined on the site.

Hours are Monday 10:00 AM–5:30 PM and Tuesday through Friday 9:00 AM–5:30 PM. To schedule a visit, request an appointment online or call (310) 830-3452.
